How long shpuld I keep my aquarium lights on in my 10 gallon tank?

I have a 10 gallon tank that has 2 incandescent light bulbs and I was wondering when do I turn them on and off. Like how many hours should I keep it on. I usually keep it on for 8 to 12 hours but I just want to be sure.
